Its job is to pull heat out of your <a href=\"https:\/\/tw.lneya.com\/blog\/chiller-fluids-water-glycol-oil-and-more.html\">process fluid<\/a>. That fluid could be water, a <a href=\"https:\/\/tw.lneya.com\/blog\/why-is-glycol-used-in-cooling-systems.html\">glycol mix<\/a>, or something special for your process.<br>&nbsp;<br>Refrigerant enters the evaporator as a low pressure liquid. In the heat exchange surface it absorbs process heat and boils into vapor. That phase change is the source of cooling power.<br>&nbsp;<br>Types you will see in the field include <a href=\"https:\/\/tw.lneya.com\/blog\/how-does-a-plate-heat-exchanger-work.html\">plate heat exchangers<\/a>&nbsp;and shell and tube units. Plate units give compact area in a small footprint. Shell and tube holds up well in large systems and in tough cleaning cycles. The plate type moves heat fast. It takes the hot refrigerant vapor from the <a href=\"https:\/\/tw.lneya.com\/blog\/what-are-the-common-types-of-chiller-compressors.html\">compressor<\/a> and turns it back into liquid. That means the condenser carries the heat the evaporator picked up plus the work done by the compressor.<br>&nbsp;<br>You will see <a href=\"https:\/\/tw.lneya.com\/air-cooled-chillers\">air cooled condensers<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/tw.lneya.com\/water-cooled-chillers\">water cooled condensers<\/a>&nbsp;on plants. Air cooled condensers use fans to push air across finned coils. They are simple and need no <a href=\"https:\/\/tw.lneya.com\/blog\/what-are-the-differences-between-a-chiller-and-a-cooling-tower.html\">cooling tower<\/a>. Water cooled condensers use cooling tower water&nbsp;and are usually more efficient for large loads. Both have to move heat fast. The condenser rejects that heat to the outside and makes the refrigerant liquid again. Think cold side and hot side.<br>&nbsp;<br><strong>Another difference is where they sit in the cycle. <\/strong>Refrigerant leaves the <a href=\"https:\/\/tw.lneya.com\/blog\/what-is-the-chiller-expansion-valvetypesfunctionswork-principle.html\">expansion device<\/a>&nbsp;into the evaporator. After the evaporator the refrigerant goes to the compressor. From the compressor it moves to the condenser and then back through the expansion device.<br>&nbsp;<br><strong>They also have different failure modes.<\/strong>&nbsp;The evaporator suffers from scaling and freezing. The evaporator takes heat from your process. The compressor raises refrigerant pressure and temperature. The condenser rejects that added heat to the ambient. The refrigerant then becomes liquid and repeats the loop. If either side falls behind the loop backs up.
